lives in Denmark where she raised her four children. She is an animal lover and
enjoys antiques. Ella is a member of NIADA, The National Institute of American Doll
Artists. Her dolls are truly works of art.
Her children and toddlers are essentially three-dimensional oil paintings.
Ellas technique is extremely time consuming but the results are well worth her
efforts. Each life-like masterpiece is hand carved in clay and
molded in a plaster-like material, called keramin, which is coated in wax and covered with
a sewn tricot mask. The mask, including the eyes, is then primed like an
artists canvas and hand painted in very fine oil paints.
She spends days painting a face to perfection until the child
seems to come to life. Ella creates only very small editions of 1 to 4 dolls from
each mold. Many consider each of her dolls a one of a kind because of the delicate,
individual work she does on each doll after it is cast. The bodies, which are nicely
weighted, are made of fabric over a wire armature.
The arms and legs are of a specially designed durable composite
material. All of Ella's dolls have top quality mohair or human hair wigs. The
clothing, which is designed by Ella, is knitted or made of the finest silk fabric.
The dolls measure about 25 to 27 inches head to toe.
Ella's dolls are a must have for the serious doll
collector. She is a dear lady with incredible talent. I love meeting with Ella
and seeing her new dolls each year in New York City. Her work is simply
breathtaking!
Ella passed away on January 11, 2006 after a year long battle
with cancer. She will be sadly missed. Her spirit will live on through her
doll children.
